CAPE COD ...in a DAY! Do you think it can be done? I might not have until having experienced it! What it takes is a true native. DAVE, our host was born and raised on Cape Cod. He knew how to see the Cape from Provincetown to Woods Hole -- in a DAY! I attempted to capture some of the highlights--from my point of view--in a single illustrated Vacation Diary entry. The following will serve as something of a "legend" for each item. Enjoy! (You might want to use THIS link to open the Vacation Diary in it's own window so you can read view at the same time! Or read through this and use the links at the bottom.) Smiling Sunshine It was a beautiful weekend. Not at all what weather dot com or the weatherman had predicted! The Opossum Is it Dave? In a way, maybe. When we drove around Friday night, one of the critters we saw on the side of the road was an opossum. For many of us in the car, it was a pleasant surprise to see one so wide awake and not roadkill. It was then I decided my MC was going to be an opossum. But Dave's story about his childhood adventure of trying to capture an "albino mink" that turned out to be an opossum with "little teeth that HURT!" that cinched this creatures' role as MC and probably Dave's alter-ego. Yeah, the "1-Day CAPE TOUR" t-shirt pretty much seals that decision. The Silent Speech Balloon No, it wasn't Dave who had nothing to say. It was his dog, Jeb. There's nothing wrong with Jeb. At least two witnesses attest to his ability to vocalize. But he just doesn't bark! The whole weekend, he never woofed a single bark. I kinda like it. The Lantern Dave has an amazing collection of lanterns! (we could have used one when we walked on the boardwalk). The Sandwhich Boardwalk A very cool "bridge" across the streams and marshes to the bay side beach. We ventured out once Friday night and again Saturday afternoon. Not-A-Typo Sign DOGS are GODS. And they are ALLOWED almost EVERYWHERE! Many Provincetown stores and pubs--even banks! had signs welcoming dogs! You almost felt like you were "missing something" if you didn't have a leash in your hand or a Fido by your side! A PT Pint of Beer The comment was made that I was only one who didn't "buy something" in Provincetown. So, we walked into this real local "hole-in-the-wall" called OLD COLONY PUB and I BOUGHT myself and everyone else a BEER! Do-It-Yourself PB&J Sandwhich A joke of a story that came up in the day's conversation--about someone giving a teacher a bag that contained some peanuts and some grapes and the instructions that this was a "do-it-yourself" sandwhich--became the illustration for SANDWHICH (MA.) Boardwalk! Fish Princess on a Pumpkin OK, now! You might be scratching your head. Our tourguide , Dave took us to this look out tower in Dennis. From there you could see the Bay, Boston and Provincetown. You could also see a small lake called Scargo Lake. It was shaped like a fish. The story went that an Indian princess received a fish in a pumpkin. So, the braves of the village built a lake in the shape of a fish. The end. We were all amazed that the lake actually was shaped like a fish that none of us asked what the pumpkin had to do with anything...(I made my Indian princess a fish herself. Which allowed me to make her look a little mermaid-like. Which allows me to reference another item on our journey. The painter who had a studio across the street from Dave's mother's antique shop. He painted mermaids all his life and barely made a living. He died. And now his paintings are very valuable and his studio was turned into a museum. Damn! as an artist, I don't find that story very hopeful!) Four C's Ice Cream This is an awful pun. There were no "C"'s on the cones. The place was called FOUR SEAS. ugh. The ice cream was home-made and delicious and this place is famous on the Cape for that! K-9 Sunglasses We're back to our opossum and his sunglasses. I never saw an opossum wearing sunglasses. But I did see a dog wearing a pair in P-Town. And that's my Vacation Diary of CAPE COD 2007! Now view the visual entry HERE. Click the image to bring you through four more "close-up" details.
