"MARLEY!" This portrait of Bob Marley is my first colored pencil on Batik. I originally did batiking in art school and would often ink on the dyed material. When I was reintroduced to the art of Batik through Jeanne Sisson, I found many things had changed over the years. Dye was now applied in concentrated form with a brush vs. full immersion in dye tubs. Wax is now "ironed out" of the fabric as a preliminary to being drycleaned. This process removes any "build-up" and leaves the material with a thin even coat of wax throughout. Many batik artist will leave this wax in. The surface is interesting in that it has the tooth of the material, a rigidity almost paper-like and the color is very vibrant (in some cases, the dyed color of batik will become lighter in drycleaning).
